Imagine two of Jesus’ disciples are on their way to a village. The two of them knew Jesus well. They had travelled with him for three years.
Today they are sad because they have lost Jesus; he is dead. They talk about it and become increasingly despondent. After a while, the risen Jesus suddenly joins the two disciples. They do not recognise him.
Jesus asks them, ‘Why are you so sad?’ The disciples tell him about Jesus and his death on the cross. Suddenly, Jesus begins to explain to them, using passages from the Old Testament, that this was how it had to happen.
After a while, they reach the village. It is already dark, and the disciples invite Jesus into their home. Everyone is sitting at the table; Jesus takes the bread and gives thanks to God. He breaks it and distributes it amongst them.
That is when they finally recognise him! ‘It’s Jesus! He’s alive!’ What joy! Their grief is suddenly swept away.
Jesus’ resurrection gives hope for life beyond death. What do you hope for?
