I’ll decide for myself. Won’t I?
Sometimes we base our lives on what others expect of us. At other times, we simply do what feels right and good to us at that moment. But who actually decides how you should live your life?
The Bible points to yet another possibility: trusting in Jesus and letting him guide your life. Paul describes it this way:
«I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.»
Galatians 2,20a
This does not mean that we lose our personality or our freedom. It means that we trust Jesus and let him guide us. For God knows us, loves us and has our best interests at heart.
Jesus illustrates this with a simple image: a good father would never give his child anything dangerous when they ask him for something good (Luke 11:11). In the same way, we can trust that God does not wish to harm us.
God willed and created every human being. And he has a good plan for this world. The Bible promises that Jesus will return and that God’s justice will finally be made visible. Those who trust in Jesus can be certain: my future lies with him.
The question is therefore not just: ‘What do I want?’ or ‘What do others expect of me?’ but also:
‘Can I trust Jesus and leave the guidance of my life in his hands?’
