The matryoshka, also known as a babushka, is a popular Russian toy: a colourfully painted doll made of wood that can be nested inside itself. If you open the first doll, you will find a smaller one underneath, and so on until there is only a tiny ‘peck’ left.
Similarly as humans, we also have different layers to our personality. The outer layer could be our social media presence, the next the first impression we make, and deep inside who we really are.
Over time, our core essence penetrates to our outermost layers. If our inside is healthy our outside will be, too. If we harbour injuries and bitterness, this will also become visible.
People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7
How amazing that God is not just superficially interested in us. He loves the ‘little one’ in us, he loves us in our being. He is a God who can cope with our weakness. With him, our hurts are healed and our bitterness becomes sweet.
What masks are you wearing? Are you allowing God into your core?
