The Israelites had waited for the coming of the Messiah for hundreds of years. With the birth of Jesus, this waiting was finally over. This newborn was not only the Messiah who would save God’s people from their sins, but God himself.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
The miracle of the birth of Jesus rests in the fact that he is fully God and fully man. He came from the glory of his Father, but he took on human form in order to live his life for us. This double nature of Jesus is significant: As God, he could pay the unending penalty for the sins of all mankind. And as a man, he could understand and share in human suffering.
Thank God he sent his Son to earth! Through this unique combination of godly and human nature, Jesus could show us the way to God and restore our relationship with him.
What does it mean for you personally that Jesus was fully God and fully man?
