Many people hope, at some point in their lives, to have enough money to be happy. Others believe that if they spend their time meaningfully, they’ll be content. Still others find fulfillment in relationships. All of these things can only fill our inner emptiness to a limited extent.
I’m sure the woman mentioned in the Bible knows this, too. She meets Jesus at the village well during the heat of midday. This is very unusual. After all, who goes to fetch water at the hottest time of the day? But this woman probably has her reasons. I think she’s an outsider in her village. Everyone talks about her, but no one talks to her. Yet that doesn’t bother Jesus. He knows that this woman has a deep longing for a fulfilling life.
What Jesus does here is exactly what God wants: He wants to enter into conversation with you and me. Through Jesus Christ, this becomes possible. Jesus meets us exactly where we need Him—namely, when we are alone, in the midst of our need.
Have you ever wondered what truly fulfills your life? Jesus says, “Your thirst for life can truly be quenched. I can give you true peace!”
But whoever drinks the water I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
John 4,14
Jesus Christ IS life—the full life, eternal life.
The life you can begin today in fellowship with God continues beyond death.
