It’s November, the air is chilly and the first snow has already fallen in the mountains. On a gorgeous day, the mountains look different now, newly clothed, somehow pure.
‘Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow’
Psalm 51:7
David, the king of Israel, turned to God with this request around 1000 BC.
Just as we cannot force the first snow ourselves, we cannot work for a pure heart ourselves. ‘We are all born in sin’, we read in the same Psalm. Sin is comparable to a wound that we cannot heal ourselves.
But God is merciful. Just as he always cloaks the mountains with new snow, he mercifully stretches out his hand to make you clean. Jesus gave his life on the cross so that the wounds you cannot heal yourself can be healed again.

Es ist November, die Luft ist kühl und in den Bergen liegt schon der erste Schnee. An einem strahlend schönen Tag sehen die Berge jetzt anders aus, neu bekleidet, irgendwie rein.
«Wasche mich, und ich werde weisser sein als Schnee.»
Psalm 51,9
Mit dieser Bitte wandte sich David, der König Israels, um 1000 v.Chr. an Gott.
So wie wir den ersten Schnee nicht selbst erzwingen können, können wir uns auch ein reines Herz nicht selbst erarbeiten. «Wir alle sind in Sünde geboren», lesen wir im selben Psalm. Sünde ist vergleichbar mit einer Wunde, die wir selbst nicht heilen können.
Aber Gott ist gnädig. Sowie er die Berge immer aufs Neue mit Schnee bekleidet, streckt er in seiner Güte die Hand aus, um dich rein zu machen. Jesus hat sein Leben am Kreuz gegeben, damit die Wunden, die du selbst nicht heilen kannst, wieder heil werden.

In the Old Testament, the Jewish people had a very different relationship with God than we can have today. Because Adam and Eve turned against God, a rift developed between the people and God. Years later, God made a covenant with the people and gave them rules for his followers to live by. The relationship with God was based on the fact that if they trusted God, things would go well for them.
Despite God’s promises and covenant, they found it difficult to trust him and to follow the rules. But regardless of the mistakes they made, God always loved his people and he wanted to make things right with them. That is why God sent his son Jesus to earth, a human who took the punishment on the cross that the people deserved.
God’s covenant for life today is:
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9

Im Alten Testament hatte das jüdische Volk eine ganz andere Beziehung zu Gott, als wir sie heute haben können. Weil Adam und Eva sich gegen Gott stellten, entstand eine Kluft zwischen den Menschen und Gott. Jahre später schloss Gott mit dem Volk einen Bund und gab ihnen Regeln, nach denen seine Anhänger leben sollten. Die Beziehung zu Gott beruhte darauf, dass es ihnen gut gehen würde, wenn sie Gott vertrauen.
Trotz Gottes Zusagen und Bündnis fiel es ihnen schwer, ihm zu vertrauen und die Regeln zu befolgen. Aber ungeachtet der Fehler, die sie machten, liebte Gott sein Volk immer und er wollte die Dinge mit ihnen in Ordnung bringen. Deshalb sandte Gott seinen Sohn Jesus als Mensch auf die Erde, der die Strafe am Kreuz auf sich nahm, die die Menschen verdienten.
Gottes Bündnis fürs Leben heute ist:
Wenn ihr also mit dem Mund bekennt: «Jesus ist der Herr,» und im Herzen glaubt, dass Gott ihn vom Tod auferweckt hat, werdet ihr gerettet.

Trick or treat? On October 31st Halloween will once again be celebrated on many streets around the world. The source of this celebration (earlier Samhain—“celebration of the dead”) hails back to the Celts. They believed that a connection between the living and the dead is possible on this day. Christians later renamed the celebration on the day before All Saints Day Halloween (from “all hallows’ Eve”). This is how Halloween has come to mean different things at different times and in different cultures.
History has already shown that a holiday can either be celebrated or avoided based on different motives. While some strictly reject Halloween due to its occult, Celtic background, others view it as a harmless scary celebration from the USA. Still others boycott the celebration because of the excessive consumption and commercialism connected to it.
Regardless of how we view Halloween, we can be certain that we can celebrate the God of life on October 31st just as on all other days. Jesus took all the power of death away on the cross. The cross is the place from which life flows into the entire history of mankind, all the way to you. Jesus rose from the grave, and with this he gives us a perspective which goes beyond an earthly death, a perspective of eternal life.
This is how we can confidently place our trust in the God of life and call out: “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
