I walk slowly through the long, white hospital corridor. Next to me, I see a woman writhing in pain. ‘God, help her!’ I whisper. A little boy stands there with a frightened look on his face and I pray: ‘Jesus, take away his fear!’ Suddenly I trip over my own feet and say: ‘Oh God, thank you that I didn’t fall!’

Mumbai, Indien. Über 12 Millionen Menschen leben in der Hafenstadt im Westen des Landes. Überall, wo ich hingehe, sehe ich Menschenmassen – hier ist man nie allein. Heute stellt mir Guy, mein indischer Freund, seine Arbeit vor. In der Mittagshitze fahren wir auf seinem Motorrad zu einem der vielen Slums der Stadt. Guy fährt täglich in die Slums, um den Menschen dort zu dienen.
Dort sehe ich viel Armut. Menschen leben unter den einfachsten Bedingungen, dicht gedrängt auf engstem Raum. Der Geruch, der durch die grossen Mengen an Müll und die fehlenden Sanitäranlagen in der Luft liegt, ist schwer zu ertragen. Viele Familien haben keinen Zugang zu Bildung oder medizinischer Versorgung. Auch der Menschenhandel im Rotlichtmilieu ist ein grosses Problem.
Zusammen mit seinem Team hat Guy mitten im Rotlichtviertel der Slums ein Haus gebaut. Es ist ein Schutzhaus, in dem Frauen Arbeit und Kindern Bildung angeboten wird – eine Oase inmitten der Wüste.
Guy hat sein Leben den Menschen im Slum gewidmet. Er erklärte mir, dass er in Jesus einen Gott hat, der ihm zuerst gedient hat. Deshalb möchte er auch anderen Menschen dienen. Ich war tief berührt, zu sehen, wie Guy aus Liebe zu Gott und den Menschen einen so selbstlosen Lebensstil gewählt hat.

Mumbai, India. Over 12 million people live in the harbour city in the west of the country. Everywhere I go, I see crowds of people – you’re never alone here. Today Guy, my Indian friend, introduces me to his work. In the midday heat, we ride on his motorbike to one of the city’s many slums. Guy travels to the slums every day to serve the people there.
I see a lot of poverty there. People live in the most basic conditions, crammed into very small spaces. The odour in the air from the large amounts of garbage and the lack of sanitary facilities is hard to bear. Many families have no access to education or medical care. Human trafficking in the red light district is also a major problem.
Together with his team, Guy has built a house in the middle of the red light district of the slums. It is a shelter where women are offered work and children education – an oasis in the middle of the desert.
Guy has dedicated his life to the people in the slums. He explained to me that in Jesus he has a God who served him first. That is why he also wants to serve other people. I was deeply touched to see how Guy has chosen such a selfless lifestyle out of love for God and people.

I like Thursdays as I’m in the city for my part-time studies and enjoy the change. After the first lesson, during the break, I went to my favourite supermarket. Like every week, I went to the refrigerated section, grabbed a cold coffee and made my way to the checkout. Then it happened: SPLASH – the coffee drink falls to the floor and bursts – a huge mess.
I was so embarrassed. I looked for an employee, told him about my mishap and asked for a cloth to wipe up the mess. The man smiled at me and said: ‘No problem, I’ll do it for you.’ I didn’t even have to pay for the broken coffee drink, I can just get a new one.
Grateful and relieved, I walked back to the study centre with my new coffee drink. On the way, I think about the experience. I feel as if I see Jesus in this man. Jesus, who meets me graciously in my failure, looks at me lovingly and says: ‘I have paid for your failure so that you can live free.

Ich mag den Donnerstag. An diesem Tag bin ich für mein Teilzeitstudium in der Stadt und geniesse die Abwechslung. In der Pause nach der ersten Unterrichtseinheit gehe ich zum Supermarkt meines Vertrauens. Wie jede Woche gehe ich zum Kühlregal, schnappe mir ein kaltes Kaffeegetränk und mache mich auf den Weg zur Kasse. Dann passiert es: PLATSCH – Das Kaffeegetränk fällt auf den Boden und platzt – eine riesige Sauerei.
Mir ist das wirklich unangenehm. Ich suche einen Angestellten, schildere ihm mein Missgeschick und frage nach einem Lappen, um die Sauerei aufzuwischen. Der Mann lächelt mich an und sagt: «Kein Problem, das mache ich für dich.» Ich muss das kaputte Kaffeegetränk nicht mal bezahlen, sondern darf mir einfach ein neues holen.
Dankbar und erleichtert gehe ich mit meinem neuen Kaffeegetränk zurück zum Studiencenter. Auf dem Weg denke ich über das Erlebnis nach. Es kommt mir vor, als würde ich in diesem Mann Jesus sehen. Jesus, der mir in meinem Versagen gnädig begegnet, mich liebend anblickt und sagt: «Ich habe für dein Versagen bezahlt, damit du frei leben kannst.»
